IDENTITY CRISIS!

The Superb Lyrebird pictured above doesn’t know who he is!  One minute he is
barking like a dog, then he sounds like a car engine, even a chainsaw!  This amazing bird is THE master of mimicry!  It can mimic anything heard in its immediate surroundings.  When it sings, about 80% of its songs are mimicked from other songbirds!  It can also whistle.  Its mimicry is made possible by a God given, complexly-muscled syrinx or vocal organ which surpasses that of any other songbird.

It is called a lyrebird because the male’s ornate tail with its curved feathers, when on display, resembles the shape of a lyre, a stringed instrument like a small U-shaped harp.  They call Southwestern Australia their home.  They are ground dwelling birds, but do roost in a tree at night.  It finds food by scratching with its feet through the leaf litter on the forest floor.  Love those worms, spiders and other misc. insects!

This bird is definitely another of Gods wonders, but it also reminds me of a person having an identity crisis.  Many people experiencing an identity crisis feel like they don’t know who they are, what they want, or what makes them unique.  There is a children’s book entitled, ‘It’s Not Easy Being a Bunny,’ written by Marilyn Sadler.  In it, P..J. Funnybunny is very sad.  He did not like being a bunny.  Yes, even bunnies can have an identity crisis!  He decided he wanted to be a bear, so he went to live with the bears.  But he wasn’t happy being a bear.  He tried being a bird, a beaver, a pig, a moose, a possum and a skunk.  In the end, he decides that what he ‘REALLY wants to be is a BUNNY!’  In the end of the book, P..J. was ‘so happy to be a bunny again.’

P..J. found the joy of being who God created him to be.

What is your identity? Do you know who you are?

Have you read the bible, your owner’s manual?  What identity did God originally intend for us to have?

Why did God create man in the first place?  It’s simple.  He wanted to!  He wanted sons and daughters.  He wanted to be your Heavenly Father.  Same reason we have children! Take a peek at the biblical account of the Garden of Eden in the book of Genesis.  He created Adam and Eve to love, cherish, counsel, guide and fellowship with.  And for His glory!  To show His greatness, magnificence, splendor, resplendence, grandeur, majesty, nobility (Definition of glory from the Oxford Dictionary).  He created you and I for the same reasons!

Like Adam and Eve, you can find your identity in being His son or daughter.  Think about this, God Himself, the ‘I AM’ would like the Pleasure of your company!  It is in His company that you will find ‘fullness of joy’ and ‘life in abundance’.  It is where you find out who you really are and where you truly belong.  Be like P.J. and find the joy of being who God created you to be!

I recommend you read a book by Dutch Sheets entitled ‘The Pleasure of His Company, A Journey to Intimate Friendship with God’.  He wrote, God ‘requests the pleasure of your company…God not only loves you, He likes you.  He created us, mere humans, because He wanted a family, not distant servants.’  If you are estranged from your Heavenly Father, you may indeed find yourself in an identity crisis.  Accept the provision of His son Jesus who will make it possible for you to be a son or daughter of God Himself.  THE PERFECT FATHER.

‘He came to His own, and His own did not receive Him.  But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name: who were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.
John 1:11-13 NKJV.

God said, ‘For I know the plans (your destiny) I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.  Jeremiah 29:11.

If you stumble over the word FATHER like I did, there is another book entitled, ‘Not Forsaken’ written by Louie Giglio that will help you understand that God is the PERFECT Father.  He loves you unconditionally and will never forsake you.  As Louie writes, his book is ‘for anyone who longs to hear your daddy say, I love you and am so proud of you.’
God the Father will!

What a great way to END an identity crisis!!!

  2. I am also reminded of the verse where God says, “If then the birds without toiling find food, shall man not find, to whom God has given both knowledge of labour and hope of fruitfulness?” Matthew 6:26. If you are suffering through an identity crisis, why would He not take care of you? Food for thought!
