Mathematics can certainly be beautiful!

Ever seen the above equation for a boat wake? Check out my title for this post.

I noticed the beauty of a boat wake and wrote this poem:

Here lies the bay
All calm and bliss
When enters one man
In a boat and this
The ripples and waves.
Completely obliss

A man’s life like this?

A boat wake is the wave a boat creates as it moves through the water.  It can be beautiful!  (See photo above).  Or it can be violent and chaotic, even deadly!

It all depends on the condition of the surface of the water.

I was an avid water-skier, growing up within a block of Lake Washington in Seattle.  My buddy’s dad owned a ski boat, moored at the bottom of our hill.  One summer we skied every day!  (Gas was $.35 cents a gallon.).  We always looked for and coveted ‘still’ waters.  Smooth, still water was like skiing on glass!  A wonderful, incomparable feeling, a feeling of peace and tranquility as you carved the surface of the water.  One person said that my skiing was like ballet!  Beautiful.  The rougher the water, the more difficult and challenging it was to ski, especially considering I only weighed 130 pounds at that time!!!  WHAT A METAPHOR!

Don’t we all look for ‘still’ water in our lives?  Ask the disciples in the boat during a storm.  They feared for their lives in that choppy water!  They woke Jesus and He ‘got up and rebuked the winds and the waves, and it was completely calm.’  Matthew 8:26.
This is what He wants to do for all of us.  He said, ‘Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.’  John 14:27.  He said He would ‘keep you in perfect peace if your mind is steadfast, trusting in Him’.  Isaiah 26:3.

No matter what storms you are going through, Jesus still wants you to be at peace!!!

As the psalmist David said, ‘He leads me beside the still waters.’  If you don’t receive the peace of Jesus and let Him ‘lead you beside the still waters’, then your storms of life could cause you to capsize and perhaps take others with you.

Like a boat, we all leave a ‘wake’ behind us.  Is yours beautiful?
Jesus’s wake certainly was.  How about Martin Luther King Jr.?  Martin Luther King Jr. was an American Baptist minister and activist, one of the most prominent leaders in the civil rights movement from 1955 until his assassination in 1968.  He received the Nobel Peace Prize when he was only 35 years old!  Wikipedia.

Or William Wilberforce who, under the influence of Thomas Clarkson, became absorbed with the issue of slavery.  Later he wrote, “So enormous, so dreadful, so irremediable did the trade’s wickedness appear that my own mind was completely made up for abolition. Let the consequences be what they would: I from this time determined that I would never rest until I had effected its abolition.”  Christianity Today.  Do yourself an extraordinary favor and watch the movie about him, ‘Amazing Grace’.  How about Corrie Ten Boom, Mother Teresa and Oral Roberts to name a few.  They had help!  They were all believers empowered by the Holy Spirit!

Read this amazing excerpt from Dutch Sheets blog post, ‘Give Him 15’ September 22, 2022! In Al Sanders’ book Crisis in Morality! He compares descendants of an atheist, Max Jukes, to the offspring of a well-known preacher of that same era, Jonathan Edwards:

Max Jukes…married an ungodly girl, and among their descendants were 310 who died as paupers, 150 as criminals, 7 as murderers, 100 as drunkards, and more than half of the women were prostitutes.

Jonathan Edwards…lived at the same time and married a godly girl. An investigation was made of 1394 known descendants of theirs.  Of these descendants, 13 became college presidents, 65 college professors, 3 United States senators, 30 judges, 100 lawyers, 60 physicians, 75 army and navy officers, 100 preachers and missionaries, 60 authors of prominence, one a vice-president of the United States, 80 became public officials…and 295 college graduates, among whom were governors of states and ministers to foreign countries.  ‘AMAZING!

Thank God we can have help with our ‘waking’.  The Holy Spirit will empower you!  He will be your advocate, comforter, guide and teacher.  He will shed His love abroad in your heart.   He will give you the fruits of His spirit, love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness and faith!!!   With Him, nothing will be impossible.  He ‘will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; He will counsel you with His loving eye on you.’  Psalm 32:8.

All you have to do is ask.

AND HE WILL KEEP YOU IN PERFECT PEACE AND YOUR WAKE WILL BE BEAUTIFUL!

  1. Beautiful poem! Also, although we may not see our ‘wakes’, if we are faithful in the Lord, it will be beautiful.
