Would you believe that elephants weighing up to 13,000 pounds are terrified of bees? Itty bitty bees! Although an elephant has a two-inch-thick skin, bees can still sting them in the soft tissue around their eyes, mouth and at the end of their trunk. If they see or hear a swarm of bees, they run for it!!! It saves their life!! Bees are life saviors? YES! They not only save the life of the elephants, they save human life as well!
Elephants are highly social and enjoy being part of the herd. But if they are startled by a loud noise or need to escape a perceived threat, they will stampede, ‘rush madly in mass panic’. What if you lived in tiny village in Africa, and a stampede of elephants comes toward your village. Do you think they would go around you? No, they will stampede right through you, killing men, women and children and causing mass destruction. Or let’s say you are a farmer. The elephants appreciate the fact that you grow food for them and help themselves to a few vegetables.
What would you do? Many farmers shoot them! Not good for the elephant population.
Fortunately for the villagers, farmers and you and I who love elephants, a zoologist named Dr. Lucy King began to research the problem and devised a unique and award-winning solution.
It’s called ‘The Elephants and Bees Project’. It is part of the ‘Save the Elephants’ Human Elephant Coexistence Program based in Sagala, Kenya. The brilliant, life and crop saving idea was to ‘use Beehive Fences’ as a natural elephant deterrent, helping protect farmers and farmland. The idea is based on her innovative research using elephants’ fear of African honeybees to help reduce crop-damage and minimize other human-elephant conflict incidences. A win-win addition to a toolbox of deterrent methods, beehive fences help create a social and economic boost to farmers through pollination services and the harvesting of ‘Elephant-Friendly Honey’. elephantsandbees.com.
Look at the photo of the elephant! You couldn’t even see a bee on this enormous animal! And yet tiny bees terrify them!! Sounds like a David and Goliath metaphor to me. David, only a boy defeated Goliath who was 9 and a half feet tall! Goliath had a suit of armor and an enormous 12 foot, 7 inch spear. David had no armor, a sling and a few smooth stones.
He defeated this Philistine giant with His words. He said, ‘You come against me with sword and spear and javelin, but I come against you in the name of the LORD Almighty, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied.’ 1 Samuel 17.
You may feel small, but if you have accepted Christ, you have the authority of the name of Jesus to defeat a very big enemy. The devil, the one who comes to ‘steal, kill, and destroy.’ John 10:10.
‘And these signs will accompany those who believe: In my name (Jesus name) they will drive out demons; they will speak in new tongues; they will pick up snakes with their hands; and when they drink deadly poison, it will not hurt them at all; they will place their hands on sick people, and they will get well.’ Mark 16:17-18.
‘Very truly I tell you, whoever believes in me will do the works I have been doing, and they will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father. And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it.’ John 14:12-14.

That’s amazing! I didn’t know that elephants didn’t like bees. What an ingenious idea to put bees around villages! David and Goliath reminds me of “faith of a mustard seed”.
