THE SERPENT.

As a followup to my last post, ‘MANATEES’, which I hope you all finally received, I’ve decided to continue talking about the ‘invasive species’ in our lives, ‘The Serpent.’

Do you have an aversion to snakes or even fear them?  You are not alone.  A 2009 report of a 40-year research program demonstrated strong fear conditioning to snakes in humans!  A fear of snakes is hardwired into our brain.  Do you know why?

Perhaps it’s because THE serpent, also called the devil, satan, prince of the power of the air, devourer, the father of lies was cursed by God!!!  Why?  Because he, THE serpent, the devil committed the first sin!  He said he would make himself like the Most-High, like God Himself.  (Not a good idea.)   He said, ‘I will ascend to the heavens; I will raise my throne above the stars of God; I will sit enthroned on the mount of assembly, on the utmost heights of Mount Zaphon.  I will ascend above the tops of the clouds; I will make myself like the Most-High.’ Isaiah 14:13-14. 

And just how did he plan to do this?  He saw the dominion that God gave to Adam and Eve and devised a plan to steal this power from them.  So he tempted Eve to eat the forbidden fruit (the proverbial apple) of the knowledge of good and evil.  The Fruit that God forbid them to eat.  Of course, both Adam and Eve listened to the lies of the serpent and took a bite of the ‘apple’. 

Because they disobeyed God, He kicked them out of The Garden, and they lost their dominion over the earth and made it possible for the serpent to steal that dominion.  That is why the scripture calls him ‘the prince of the power of the air.’   

So the Lord said to the serpent, ‘Because you have done this, cursed are you above all livestock and all wild animals! You will crawl on your belly and you will eat dust all the days of your life.’ In other words, you’ll become a SNAKE.  And God went on to say that he would put enmity (the state or feeling of being actively opposed or hostile to someone or something) between the serpent and the woman, Eve, ‘who would become the mother of all the living.’ Genesis 3.

Now you know why we have a ‘hardwired’ aversion to snakes!!!

Do you notice that some snakes are still beautiful like the green snake above?  One author says this is a remnant of the beauty the serpent had before God cursed him.  Good thought.

Do you believe any of this?  Do you believe that there is a devil who currently has dominion over the earth we live in?  Or do you think like the Beatles lyrics, Ob-la-di, ob-la-da, Life goes on.  

Do yourself a favor.  Make two lists based on John 10:10, where Jesus said, ‘the thief (the devil) comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life and have it to the full.’ 

                       ABUNDANT LIFE                                        STEAL KILL AND DESTROY

Love     Joy     Peace     Forgiveness     Life to the full

Hate    Sadness    Chaos    Unforgiveness    Death and destruction

Keep going with this list and you will begin to see the who’s who.  Who is doing what on this earth and begin to realize that God is often blamed for what the devil has done.  

Thank God when you accept Jesus Christ as your Lord and savior, he gives you back the dominion that lousy snake stole from Adam and Eve; dominion over the earth and the devil himself!!!!!!!!!  ‘I (Jesus) have given you authority (dominion) to trample on snakes and scorpions and to overcome all the power of the enemy; nothing will harm you.’ Luke 10:19.
