RHYTHM!!!

I am writing these posts because, in the words of the psalmist, David, ‘Great is the LORD and most worthy of praise; his greatness no one can fathom.  One generation commends (His) works to another; they tell of (His) mighty acts.  (I want to) speak of the glorious splendor of (His) majesty— (so that we) will meditate on (another of His) wonderful works’, Rhythm!
Psalm 145:3-5.

Click on the video, and watch ‘another of His wonderful works that no man can fathom’!!
Face to face with a Warrior Wasp  (Drumming Wasp)

I found this video on YouTube quite by accident and was astounded at the synchronized rhythm ‘a strong, regular, repeated pattern of movement or sound’ created by BUGS!!!  These bugs are Synoeca wasps, commonly known as warrior or drumming wasps.  They are very aggressive, and their ‘drumming’ is a warning that they are threatened and you better RUN!!  Their sting is extremely painful and is a #4 on the Schmidt Pain Index!  Fortunately for us, they are only found in the tropical forests of the Americas.

Do you have rhythm???  Can you clap your hands in synch with everybody else?

Actually, Scientist Fleur Bouwer discovered that ‘a sense of rhythm – also known as the beat – is so fundamental to humans that we recognize patterns in music even without paying any attention or receiving any training.’  However, the fact that nearly everyone is capable of recognizing musical rhythm does not mean that everybody can dance to that rhythm.  This requires more complex motor skills on top of the ability to recognize rhythm, and unfortunately these skills are not as universal to humans as the sense of rhythm.  ScienceDaily.

Is it any wonder that we have a ‘sense of rhythm’.  Rhythm is everywhere!  We were listening to our mother’s heartbeat in her womb for 9 months!  Your heart beats (hopefully) at 60 beats per minute.  There are rhythmic patterns in architecture, art and poetry.

The earth itself has a rhythm.  It travels around the sun every 365 days and rotates once every 24 hours.  It also has what scientists call a ‘heartbeat’ of 7.38 hertz caused by its magnetic field.
Look at ocean waves, the tides.  Alternating or direct electric currents.

There are electromagnetic waves, travelling through the air in a rhythmic pattern of waves, light, radar, etc. and sound:  cell phones, AM, FM radio, television signals.  (See chart below).

We are inundated by visible and invisible waves traveling through the air, each having a rhythm of its own!

No wonder we need a break from all this inundation once in a while.  That we feel more at peace and generally happier in the natural world!  The scientists say this is because all these electronic devices are out of tune with the ‘heartbeat’ of the natural world, the electromagnetic field that surrounds the earth.  This heartbeat of the earth just happens to have a natural frequency (number of cycles per second) of 7.83 Hz which matches the alpha frequency in your brain.  Your brain can produce five different types of brain waves:  Delta, Theta, Alpha, Beta and Gamma.  You notice that Alpha waves fall in the middle of that series of waves. Your brain produces these alpha waves when you’re awake, but not really concentrating on any one thing.

It is when you feel the most relaxed and at peace.  So, get away from it all once in a while and enjoy and learn from the messages in the natural world.

Slow down.  Take the time to meditate (continued or extended thought; reflection; contemplation) on the words of God.  The scripture says that they are:  ‘life to those that find them and health to one’s whole body’.  Proverbs 4:20-22.
Perhaps meditation is a key to stimulating the alpha waves in your brain, (which of course, the authors of the bible didn’t know about).  After all, as science has since discovered, your alpha waves are in tune with the earth itself.  It makes you wonder if Adam and Eve who undoubtedly experienced perfect peace in the garden lived in a constant communion with God and the earth at 7.83 Hz!!!

  1. Very interesting about being to disengage from “electronic rhythm”. In early childhood education the recommendation is no screens to 3 years of age…. and even then limited. Probably because of this very thing…. the disruption of the natural rhythm we were created with!

  2. Very powerful Stu.
I have been thinking about musical instruments lately & how beautifully crafted they all are: whether stringed, woodwind, or brass. Where did the inspiration and development of them all come from? Both for their sound and appearance. Of course we know…

  3. I never thought about the natural rhythm of the world like that! But it all makes sense. It explains why getting out into nature is rejuvenating.
