THE KILLDEER!

The beautiful Killdeer Bird pictured above named itself with its shrill, piercing call that sounds like kill-dee!
It is our friend because it eats bugs, especially those nasty grasshoppers, but also because it is the perfect metaphor for the following scripture:
‘Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.’  John 15:13.
This bird flops around on the ground faking a broken wing whenever a possible predator comes anywhere near its eggs!  (See link below to watch it in action)! It obviously is willing to sacrifice itself to save its young.  Does that sound familiar?

Jesus didn’t fake a broken wing, but willingly allowed himself to be crucified to save us!                          He ‘laid down His life’ for us!
‘This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down His life for us.’ 1 John 3:16.

‘Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved!’  Romans 10:13.

You may be able to see this bird in action in your own back yard because it is native to North America!  It lays its speckled eggs on the ground and seems to prefer places close to humans.  One was seen next to a sidewalk on the Oral Roberts University campus here in Tulsa!  Or they may lay their eggs on a golf course, baseball field, on a gravel roof or even a children’s playground!  The gray speckled eggs are well camouflaged and therefore hard to spot.  But don’t worry about them, God has a plan.

According to the National Audubon Society, the killdeer chicks that look like ‘cotton balls on two toothpicks’ are precocial, able to run around and feed themselves within hours of hatching.  Not only that, they’re tough!  As I mentioned, sometimes mama lays her eggs in the gravel on the roof of a building!  What a knot head!  Chicks have been seen dropping SEVEN stories after hatching on a roof top without injury!
