Look at the photo above. Can you see the frogfish eyes, its mouth, and recognize the lure lying in wait on its head? This fish is a visual MESS!!! But the mess serves it well! This helps it hide in the coral reefs. It can also change color to match the reef. Believe it or not, this fish rarely swims but prefers to walk on the ocean floor using its elbow-like pectoral fins! You’ll find it hanging around the reefs using its built-in fishing pole to lure prey to its mouth.
As soon as prey gets close to the ‘frog’, it opens its huge mouth which expands up to 12 times its resting size and the suction pulls the prey in. This mouth action takes only 1/6,000 of a second!
They can also consume fish up to twice their own size!!!
‘Frog’ is one of the 210 species of anglerfish! But what really intrigued me was his relatives!
There are 11 species of anglerfish that live in the deep sea, some can be 4 feet long. These deep-sea fish swim around using their built-in fishing pole with its bioluminescent lures.
Their home is in the deep sea in what is called the ‘abyssal’ realm, from 2000 to 26,000 feet below sea level. It’s abysmal alright, you can’t see a thing! Can you imagine trying to find a mate? Per usual, God had a plan. The male of the species is smaller than the female. When he finally finds his mate, he jumps on her back, bites her and holds on. Not too romantic. His mouth excretes a special enzyme that fuses his mouth to her skin! The two fishes become one, the male thereafter remaining totally dependent on the female. They ‘cleave’ to each other, they stick together tightly. That word sound familiar?
It comes from Genesis 2! After God created a woman for Adam, he replied, ‘This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man. Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.’ Genesis 2:23-24. KJV.
Who would ever guess that you would find such an amazing metaphor 20 some thousand feet below sea level? Only God! His messages are everywhere!!! Once again, these fish are a physical manifestation of a spiritual truth! God wants us to be joined together where we remain dependent on Him for our spiritual nourishment! When you ask Jesus to come into your life, He sends His Holy Spirit to live inside you! Now that’s a major CLEAVE!
The scripture makes this clear: ‘Whoever is united with the Lord is one with Him in spirit.’
1 Corinthians 6:17. The Holy Spirit comes as our advocate, helper, comforter, and guide!
CLEAVE!
