A WEIGHTY MATTER

Galileo’s illustration of gravity by Nick Branston!

Do you remember the quote by Izaak Walton from my intro?  He said, “God sends us 10,000 truths…but we are shut up to them.”  Take a moment and ‘open up’ to gravity.  Think about it.  Drop something on the floor.  We all just take it for granted.  It is what holds everything together!  Without it we would all of a sudden just float out into space and die!!!  It is a critically important metaphor!

Gravity is an invisible force that pulls objects towards each other.

God is an invisible force that pulls people towards each other and toward Himself!

Galileo’s diagram at the top shows the force of gravity pulling to a single, central point.  Gravity is a perfect metaphor of what God has been doing since the fall of man.  He is that single, central point pulling all people to Himself and to each other from all directions at the same time.

You ask yourself, what is the meaning of life?  It is simple!!! It is to be reconciled to God!

As the scripture says, ‘We implore you on Christ’s behalf: Be reconciled to God’. 2 Corinthians 5:20. Notice the word IMPLORE!  The word means plead with, beg, entreat, beseech, press, push!   That is how critical it is to ‘be reconciled to God, NOW in this life while you have the chance!  Your destiny is in your hands!

As Jesus said, ‘And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to myself.’  John 12:32. Jesus was in fact ‘lifted up from the earth’ and placed on a cross, fulfilling His own prophesy.  What is interesting is that the force of gravity coming from all directions increases steadily as you move toward the center. It tells me that the closer you get to God, as you ‘draw near’, the stronger He pulls you to Himself!  The scripture makes this clear, ‘Draw near to God and He will draw near to you.’ James 4:8 NKJV.

Another interesting fact about gravity is what scientist call the ‘Goldilocks Zone’, where gravity is ‘repulsed and neutralized among three bodies, the sun, the earth and the moon.  It keeps the earth at just the right distance from the Sun where water, vital for life on earth, can exist in liquid form’.  Interesting Engineering.

In this blog, I have shown you many ‘effects’ that indicate that our invisible God is real.  Here is another! Think about how He placed us on the perfect planet to sustain us with just enough gravity to keep us on the ground.  Check this out, a 160- pound man would weigh 10.7 pounds on Pluto and 404.4 pounds on Jupiter!  If you could stand on the sun, you’d be crushed, weighing a mere 4331.5 pounds!

What is super interesting is scientists still do not really understand gravity.  It seems to be a natural phenomenon as mysterious as God Himself!  Perhaps they would understand it better if they knew that the Bible claims that Gravity is one of the tools that Jesus uses to hold everything together.  Colossians 1:16 says that ‘The Son, (Jesus) is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation.  For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him.  He is before all things, and IN HIM ALL THINGS HOLD TOGETHER.’

Next time you drop something and think of gravity, remember the one who created it and uses it to hold all this together, with each planet, sun, moon and stars keeping their God placed position so that we could have life and, thank God, our feet on the ground!
