Don’t you just love houseflies? WRONG!!! Buzzing around your head, getting on your food and (almost) wrecking your picnic. And all the time you are thinking about where they came from. My wife and I attended a country church for a time. They invited us to a church potluck picnic at a farm. The food was spread out on several tables. It was covered with flies. No one seemed to care so, as the saying goes, ‘when in Rome, do as the Romans do’.
We ate the food knowing full well that the flies probably came from cow dung! We survived!
The fact is many of the 110,000 species of flies around the world spread disease to humans including dysentery, diarrhea, cholera, typhoid fever, leprosy, anthrax, tularemia, tuberculosis, yaws and poliomyelitis.
Yet despite this, I am writing this because it dawned on me that flies are another proof that GOD LOVES US!
There was no death in the Garden of Eden and therefore, no need for flies and scavenger birds, God’s clean-up crew. When Adam and Eve sinned, ‘sin and death entered the world’.
‘Therefore, just as sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin, and in this way death came to all people, because all sinned.’ Romans 5:12.
AND, as a very loving gesture, since death had entered the world, God invented or repurposed flies and birds to protect us from the perils of carrion.
You wonder why there are so many flies? One female house fly can lay up to 500 eggs over a period of 4-5 days! Another amazing fact about flies that I certainly didn’t know about is their ability to ‘taste with sensors in their feet’…. No wonder they flit about here and there. Next time they land on your PBJ, just know they are simply tasting your sandwich to decide if they should indulge!
Remember that not only do flies break down organic material which puts nutrients in the soil, but they also serve as pollinators and food for a host of other critters.
You can thank God if you don’t live in Central or South American where the Adult Timber Fly makes its home. These flies can grow to be 3.15 inches BIG!
THINK ABOUT THANKING GOD FOR FLIES AND FOR SURE LOOK FORWARD TO HEAVEN WHERE THEY WON’T BE NEEDED!
For as the prophet Isaiah said of heaven, ‘They will neither harm nor destroy on all my holy mountain.’ Isaiah 11:9. ‘He (God) will do away with death forever.’ Isaiah 25:18.
A P.S., something special. My wife and I were at the Napa Flats Wood-fired Kitchen restaurant here in Tulsa. We noticed that the outside tables had a small fan on them. I asked the waitress what they were for!!!!! She said that they were called ‘Fly Away’ and they kept the flies from their patrons outside table! We bought some from Amazon. They work great! Three fans on a picnic table and NO FLIES!
They are advertised as ‘Fly Fans for Tables, Rechargeable, 1800mah Large Capacity Fly Table Fans with Soft Blades, Food Fans, USB Tabletop Fly Spinner Rechargeable, 4CPS.
Enjoy your next outdoor picnic WITHOUT FLYS JOINING YOU FOR LUNCH!!!
it’s so beautiful to be reminded of the living care provide by our creator!
