Isn’t God astounding. He cares for even the smallest, seemingly insignificant things, even your family dog! (See photo above). ‘His eye is on the sparrow’, the words of the famous hymn come from Matthew 6:25-26. Jesus said, ‘Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?’ In other words, God is faithful. He watches over and takes care of the smallest things. Why would He not care for you.
If God watches over and cares for the smallest things, shouldn’t we who are called to be conformed to His image, (Romans 8:29), and to have ‘His love completed in us’ because ‘in this world we are like Jesus!’ 1 John 4:17.
The Jewish people had 613 laws they were commanded to obey! GotQuestions.org lists all of them in the chronological order of the Old Testament, with an accompanying text of that law. See the following link: https://www.gotquestions.org/613-commandments.html.
Law number 544 given in 1451 BC, according to gotquestions.org reads: ‘If you come across a bird’s nest beside the road, either in a tree or on the ground, and the mother is sitting on the young or on the eggs, do not take the mother with the young. You may take the young, but be sure to let the mother go, so that it may go well with you, and you may have a long life.’ Deuteronomy 22:6-7.
Here is a law that declares that care for a small thing carries with it a blessing for you!!!
‘It may go well with you and you may have a long life!’
This Jewish law primarily refers to the wisdom of leaving the mother bird alone so she can continue to provide eggs for the Jewish people! But it also alludes to the fact that God cares about the smallest of things, birds. To kill even a small thing which God watches over and cares for is a SIN. Obedience to this law which the Jewish people say is the least of all the commandments, shows a great regard for God’s law and His creation and brings with it a great reward.
The remembrance of this may perhaps, some time or other, keep us from doing a hard or unkind thing to those whom we have at our mercy. It is also true that if God cares for the birds, He also cares for our pets. And to treat them right will also bring the blessing of a ‘long life’ and a life that ‘goes well’!
It also brings to mind Luke 16:10, ‘Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much, and whoever is dishonest with very little will also be dishonest with much. It’s a principle about stewardship, integrity, and how God builds trust by testing faithfulness in seemingly insignificant things before entrusting more.
LOVE AND CARE FOR THE LITTLE THINGS!
definitely a expectation from God for us to live with integrity and empathy. Good message, Stu!
